Our Cottage

The cottage is a great base for exploring the northern Highlands : you are 1 hour from Inverness, 2 hours from John o’Groats and 1 hour from the rugged hills of the west coast. Close at hand, there are walks through forests, along the seashore and over the hills. There are opportunities for salmon, trout and sea fishing, golf at Royal Dornoch or at the other 21 courses in the area (the nearest course to Achue is only 2 miles away). Or visit Dunrobin Castle, follow the Pictish Trail, go panning for gold at Kildonan, investigate iron age brochs, go mountain biking, trace the history of the Highland Clearances or watch salmon leaping at the Falls of Shin. You could spot red deer on the hills or roe deer in the woods, look out for ospreys and hen harriers, see otters at Loch Migdale or dolphins in the Moray Firth. Or take a guided tour round the Glenmorangie Distillery and go to the Highland Games. Nearby Skibo Castle is where the rich and famous go for peace, golf and relaxation (and where Madonna got married) so you will be in good company.

If all that sounds too energetic then there are good restaurants in the area where you can be served excellent local produce in comfortable and friendly surroundings after a browse round local craft shops. Or just sit in Achue, read, have a drink, relax and enjoy the peace, fresh air and scenery. One German visitor joked that he couldn’t sleep on the first night “because of the quiet”. Other guests love the brightness of the stars that you only get when you are away from streetlights.

The cottage itself is a nineteenth century croft house which was extensively rebuilt and extended in 1992. There are 3 bedrooms: a king size double downstairs with ensuite shower room and toilet, a double upstairs and a twin room. There is a bathroom upstairs. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the gadgets you might want and a separate dining area. The lounge has a TV and video and seating for 6. The facilities and standard are rated “very good” and the whole cottage is centrally heated. All this is contained within a walled garden with good parking set well back from the road. A cot, high chair and children’s toys are available.

We are just half a mile away if you have any questions during your stay.

The croft is actively farmed with a flock of North Country Cheviots, hens, geese, ducks, cats, dogs and a horse. Fresh produce is available in season.
